Why are optical position encoders so important?
The use of optical motor position encoders permits true unattended analysis. Stepper motors with no position encoders can periodically stall, preventing the stage or spectrometer from reaching its proper destination, and the user may not notice the error. Position encoders are so important that all new microprobes have them. On all older microprobes, Advanced MicroBeam replaces the stepper motors with optically encoded servomotors for each X, Y, and Z stage motor and each spectrometer motor. High-end analytical software such as Probe For EPMA can monitor position encoders and ensure that you analyze exactly where your client specifies.
